THEATRE OF THE LONG NOW
111 TREES FOR THE ROSENSTEIN

Imagine planting a tree with an expected lifespan of around 100 years - ambitious, as the average life expectancy of street trees in cities is often much shorter than a human life. On the stem of this tree we attach a small capsule containing a work of art created especially for this location.

Now imagine how this tree grows over its entire lifetime until it finally ages, becomes increasingly unstable and only its deadwood structure remains. Every year we are going to plant a tree as such, along a straight line, over a period of 100 years. In this way, a row of trees is created piece by piece, making it possible to experience in about 100 years the entire life cycle of an urban tree in time and space - while the surrounding district, the Rosenstein quarter, is constantly changing and ageing with the trees.

Hidden in the trunks of these 100 trees will be 100 small capsules containing artworks by 100 different artists. These works of art will be retrieved over time as the trees gradually die.

Over the entire development period, neither humans nor animals will experience the entire performance themselves. But the row of trees will set the pace for the new Rosenstein quarter and at least a century of the city's history will pass by - it will become an archive and a journey through time.

THEATRE OF THE LONG NOW

The Theatre of the Long Now is the promise to stage a performance lasting at least 100 years on a wasteland in Stuttgart. Growth processes, construction processes, social, political and performative processes are part of this performance. By means of botanical and performative interventions, the artists Alice Ferl and Stine Hertel, together with the architects of Bureau Baubotanik, react to the development of the wasteland and actively intervene in its growth process. The wasteland as a supposed empty space in the urban context thus becomes a space for action and a place of cultural negotiation.

In the Theatre of The Long Now, there are countless participants who influence and thus co-determine the development process of the wasteland. These include the soil, plants and insects, stones and minerals, technical equipment made of metal and a turtle, which embody the long-term nature of time. The usual cost pressure, lack of solidarity and sometimes incomprehensible political developments are juxtaposed with a wide variety of exciting weather events, forms of staging, surprising offers of cooperation and newly acquired knowledge. This field of tension is just as decisive for the course of the performance as the stamina of various institutions that give this performance a structure. The further course of the performance is not yet foreseeable, as some participants have not yet taken their place or have not yet been discovered. But there is still some time for that ...
